Shiatsu massageShiatsu is an ancient form of body work from Japan, using stretches, kneading, rocking, gentle holding and palm and thumb techniques to provide a healing process.

This type of massage also uses knee, elbow and foot pressure, as well as rotations of joints and limbs and stretches. It covers the physical body, emotional and spiritual aspects, and it supports the body's natural ability to balance itself.

Shiatsu is an all body treatment working on the meridians. Meridians are channels where energy (Ki) flows in the body in a more concentrated manner.

Japanese Ki (Chinese Qi) is considered a vital energy.

Due to various disturbances Ki might be weak, blocked or overflowed and this can be treated by stretching and applying pressure along chosen meridians, areas and points.

Shiatsu is performed on a futon mat on the floor and the patient is required to wear comfortable and loose clothing such as a sports suit (preferable cotton).

Although Shiatsu is usually practiced on the floor it can also be performed on the massage table or in the sitting position if the patient has problems lying down on the floor.

Shiatsu diagnosis plays an important role and involves: meridian pathways, 5 Elements and Yin and Yang theory. The aim of treatment is to boost and support weak areas and relieve tension areas.

There are many forms of massage treatment but Shiatsu has shown itself to be a very effective technique. It is an excellent form of pain relief, lowering the level of adrenaline and other stress hormones.

It releases energy in areas where the Ki is blocked or stagnated, and brings back energy to areas that are depleted.

This treatment can help with:

  • stiffness in muscles and joints
  • pain
  • stomach and digestive problems
  • headaches
  • sleep problems
  • emotional stress
  • PMS and menstruation disorders
  • burn out from overstressed life style

Aside from the benefits to health, Shiatsu is a very good technique to bring proper breathing and deeper relaxation.
